This Is What We Hand Out On Halloween And It's Better Than Candy

Even adults come to the door for this neighborhood tradition.

When I was a little girl, we would trick-or-treat at our neighbor Barbara Dougan’s house first to make sure we didn’t miss out on her homemade popcorn balls. Even after we moved to a new neighborhood, we would drive to her house every year on Halloween. When I moved to L.A., Barbara mailed me the recipe so I could make it for myself, and eventually I began making it for the whole neighborhood. Even parents come to my door to grab bags for themselves, and I couldn’t prouder to carry on her tradition.

Ingredients

4 tbsp butter, unsalted

½ cup light brown sugar

8 large Jet-puffed marshmallows

2 bags microwave popcorn

Note: I use Orville Redenbachers Naturals, Simply Salted. If you use unsalted popcorn, be sure to use salted butter.

Instructions

Pop the popcorn and allow it to cool.

Pour the popcorn into a large stainless steel mixing bowl.

Line your counter with non-stick foil or parchment paper.

Melt the butter, sugar and marshmallows in a sauce pan, stirring constantly to prevent boiling.

Drizzle the melted mixture over the popcorn and toss gently and quickly, using a plastic spatula.

Pour the popcorn onto the parchment paper and spread into an even layer. (I recommend wearing plastic gloves for this step).

Allow the popcorn to cool before packing it into treat bags.
